Description of Monopoly Tycoon Windows
- Overall, Monopoly Tycoon is one of the best 'modern conversions' of popular board games you'll ever find. The underlying economic model is top-notch, the gameplay is fun and innovative, and the nostalgia is intact. The game moves at a frantic pace which may just prove too much for some, but which is ultimately true to the spirit of the board game.
- Many unlicensed, non-commercial computer games based on Monopoly, distributed on bulletin board systems and public domain software disks, appeared in the early history of the personal computer. Parker Brothers was unaware of the games until it learned of one version that stated that it was 'A Parker Brother game' on the title screen.
Recently, there've been a bunch of different tycoon series of games. This isn't from any of them.
Monopoly Tycoon, like the name suggests, is based on the classic board game 'Monopoly'. It has all of the classic locations, as well as a set of docklands properties which may or may not be from some international version of the game I've never seen.
Unlike the board game, which took a completely abstracted approach to running your business empire, this game throws you into the daily affairs of organising a business empire.
In this game, you can run day stores (which fall broadly into two categories, food and goods), and night stores (which sell entertainment services), as well as setting up apartments and hotels. The citizens quickly learn which blocks provide which services, so organising your blocks into sets of each of these three areas is a must. Stock is bought in the morning, and maximum levels are dictated by the base size and number of floors of the business. You can set prices for the goods sold in the stores, too, and you have to keep an eye on the opposition to make sure they're not undercutting you and stealing away our business.
Businesses can be of high, medium or low quality, depending on the block you're building them on. You must keep track of what you're building because a low-quality shack on either of the indigo blocks won't attract business from the wealthy residents, and won't bring in business from the people living in low-quality blocks either.
The AI of the city's inhabitants is good, they learn where they'll get the best deals, and they will ignore you if you're not it. The class system of the townspeople is basic, but effective, the poorer people are, the less concerned they are about image and location, and more about price. The rich people don't care how much they pay, so long as they don't have to walk too far to get it, or hang around with the plebs of the city.
It is possible to lease city blocks for 25-year periods, which can bring you rental income from opponents' properties, or simply prevent you from having to pay it.
There are also city services, such as the Railways, Waterworks and Electric Company, as well as the new Telecoms and Gasworks utilities. Building up a monopoly of either of these aspects of city services is just as devastating as it is in the board game. Opponents' AI is variable, opponents tend to change radically when they're in trouble, but all are consistent with the way they're described by the game. Not too nice for the couple of AI players the design team decided to brand 'moron', though. You'll find that a player will usually follow the same tactics, game after game. Some want property, some want lots of businesses, some want the utilities, and it's possible to learn these patterns and exploit them, but they really do feel as if you're playing and exploiting the weaknesses of a personality, rather than just a bot.
Overall, Monopoly Tycoon is one of the best 'modern conversions' of popular board games you'll ever find. The underlying economic model is top-notch, the gameplay is fun and innovative, and the nostalgia is intact. The game moves at a frantic pace which may just prove too much for some, but which is ultimately true to the spirit of the board game. Highly recommended, and an induction into the Hall of Belated Fame.

I love this game. When I had the CD's years ago, I could save the game that I was in the process of playing. Now, the 'Save' button is not active. How do I save a game in progress? Thanks.

You guys can download 'Daemon Tools Lite' to your PC. And then right-click on the ISO file, and open it with Daemon Tools Lite. Or you can also open Daemon Tools Lite, browse through your PC Library, and select the ISO file. The file will be mounted as a disk in 'My PC'

This is absolutely great. I'm running this on Windows 10 and even the multiplayer mode works, at least I can connect to my Win 10 virtual machine which also runs this game :-)
OK, here is what you do (Win 10 only):
1st: Download the ISO and the patch. Don't bother with the other stuff for now.
2nd: If you want to play the multiplayer activate Direct Play via Control Panel - Programs and Features - Turn Windows Features on or off - Activate Direct Play in Legacy Components. If you don't want to play against your friends in the multiplayer don't bother.
3rd: Unzip all the files you just downloaded and find the ISO. Mount the ISO via right click on the ISO file.
4th: Install the game on your computer. Don't start the game after the install.
5th: Apply the patch next. Don't start the game after installing the patch.
6th: Unmount the ISO by going to This PC and do a right click on the virtual CD Rom and click eject.
7th: Copy or move the ISO file in a folder where you'll always find it because you'll need to mount it every time you want to play.
Now you could delete all the files you've downloaded, or save them for later :-)
8th: Mount the ISO and start the game as administrator. No need to select a compatibility mode. A little window should appear. Click on Configuration and flag No Music. Select the highest settings in Bit Depth and Screen resolution. If your max screen resolution is not listen you have to set it manually. Click on done.
9th: Click on start game and it should run. It even runs on my virtual machine.
10th: If yo want to play in the multiplayer and you have activated direct play you need to hop back on the desktop a few time with tab + alt and approve the firewall settings for this game. (I had to do this 3 times)
11th: Have fun :-)
Manual screen setting: Find the config.cfg in your games folder and open it with the notepad. Replace SysSetup width and SysSetup height with you settings. If the game doesn't start, try something else.

hey!
I can't get it passed the screen asking for the disk. as I get from previous comments the game needs to be mounted. how do I do that and when? can someone with more knowledge provide a step by step instructions. Would be very helpful.
thank you :)

Downloaded the game. Played the game for a couple hours.
Came back three days later, and it requires a CD.
I've learned that the game has to be 'mounted.' Downloading magicISO and Gizmo brought no resolution. Of course, I'm a million times outside of my sphere of knowledge, but it seems you may need a computer science degree to navigate these things.
I got two fun hours out of it when I actually never thought I'd be able to play this game again, so I'll leave with my head high.

is it just me or does this download not come with 'skirmish mode' - a fundamental part of the monopoly tycoon game. Is the download somewhat incomplete? My single player mode only has the campaign.

Thanks for the download! worked when I installed the 1.2v here: https://archive.org/details/MonopolyTycoon1.2. Ran in Windows 98 compatibility mode. Had to turn sound off, 1.6 sound fix did not work.
Blaze2019-02-19-7 points
Magic.Iso works to mount the game.
Once the patch to v1.2 is installed correctly. The loading screen stops crashing make sure to run it in 95 compatibility mode and run as administrator and it works fine :)

Dl'd first the game, then the patch. As I generally turn off sound for all games anyway, this was not an issue. Needed the patch, tho, to get it to get past the splash screen. PC using Windows 10, no problems, post-patch install. I loved this game many years ago, but lost that harddrive long ago, so it's nice to be able to replace this game. thanks!
mrpenguinb2018-11-17-1 point
Download the fix below the 1.2 patch. Extract the .zip file contents into a folder and then run the ApplyPatch.bat as Administrator. If Windows Smart screen pops-up, click 'More info' and then 'Run Anyway'.
The patch should be successfully applied!

Here is a proper guide on how to get the game to play music properly again: https://mcdebugrndmstuff.blogspot.com/2018/10/monopoly-tycoon-directsound-music-fix.html
mrpenguinb2018-10-231 point
To get the game running WITH music enabled, you need to get an older version of dxmasf.dll from SysWOW64 and drmclien.dll. Once you delete the old dxmasf file (gain ownership of the file) you can use a DirectShow Filter Manager to register the dxmasf.dll.
The music works perfectly after applying this fix! :D

Yep gutted, no cd error
Moose Yee2017-06-104 points
I think the only way to get this working is to disable the music (start the game, click 'Configuration,' then 'no music.') There are videos and playlists on Youtube with the music for each decade, so you can still have it playing in the background.
Sparrow2017-06-01-6 points
I can't get it past the first intro movie - it crashes.
Then I've installed the update - it asks me to insert the CD (Even though I've mounted the monopoly tycoon onto the D drive)

This is a serious game of Parker Brothers's Monopoly that is fun and complex, combining all the areas of the traditional board game missing from earlier versions. It even adds new ways to play the game such as the multi-player and online features, and especially the customization of your own board! You can get right into the game with the Quick Game rules that may save time if you don't fancy setting up all the parameters. All of these features will definitely retain interest in the game.
Unfortunately, there's bad news. The most noticeable difference would be the introduction of a 3D board and 3D tokens, which is a major improvement over the previously pre-rendered animations of Monopoly for Windows. However at first, it might be difficult discovering how to rotate the board and once you reach that point there seems to be a memory-hogging problem. If you're going to utilize this new 3D board you're going to need a computer upgrade to at least the lower end of a Pentium III, as well as tons of RAM. The board moves utterly slow and choppy, which might freeze up the game and your system!

To customize your board you're going to need to make BMP files if you intend to skip the provided clip art. This becomes a pain because it isn't so easy, and once you do have your desired images and have them placed on the board, they won't change your life because it doesn't look all that great. The BMPs lose resolution and are set in small boxes, allowing the names of the 'streets' to fill up the rest of the spots.
Don't fret though because there are a few features that actually work as promised. The ability to play up to six human players and the online challenge will keep you afloat. The ease of use regarding mouse control couldn't be simpler with easy clicking, dragging and dropping. Also, the 10 different city versions on top of the classic board are already provided for variety, as well as a graphical calculator to aid you in making those hard decisions. And of course, the graphics are super detailed and you get to choose from a pretty decent amount of tokens to play with.
Other features allow you to customize default options like the salary amount for passing GO. Even setting the auction time delay will put pressure on the current player to hurry up and buy a property, trade with another player, or skip the entire transaction altogether. There are a lot of specifics that lend to the realism of real estate.
If you do happen to have a high-end system then you're in for a surprise. Not only can you rotate the board, but you'll have the option to enable lighting effects, various camera angles, bilinear filtering, token animations and even dithering. Fortunately you don't need a high-end system to listen to Mr. Monopoly's comments, the music, or the token voices. Original music scores and realistic sound effects also serve the game quite nicely.
Everything else is pretty basic Monopoly that drives the core of the game with plenty of fake money to go around. If you're a Monopoly fan or the casual board game player, Monopoly won't disappoint.
Graphics: Although there aren't any special effects, at least the board and tokens are fully 3D with lots of color and nice animation.
Sound: Sound effects are zany and although don't have any stereo effects, they are still good. The music is original and fits the game appropriately.
Enjoyment: It's Monopoly and does the job well.
Replay Value: As with most games that deal with this classic board game, you can play till your eyes fall out.
